  1. Take your time - It is imperative in learning anything new that you take your time. Music and instruments are especially challenging in the beginning. A lot of instruments will stretch and build muscles that you didn't even know you had. And to see progress you must be efficient and in tune with your body as to not over do any specific task. This applies to singing as well as you can easily damage your vocal chords if you push to long or hard. The old adage of playing until your fingers bleed is exactly that, an old saying that should not be taken literally as this can severely hinder progress.

  2. Learn your scales - While music theory is still in and of itself theory, it provides the best tools and knowledge known to man kind so far of how to create music. While listening and using your ears provides best tools available, it is important in the beginning phases of learning to learn and understand scales and the basic building blocks of music. It is very far and few between that great idols such as Eddie Van Halen have the talent and gift of learning completely by ear. So crack down on some of the boring stuff for now and I can promise an immense return for the hard work put in.

  3. Have fun! - Learning anything can be extremely daunting and boring at first, especially music and music theory. It is extremely important to have fun while doing it. A tip I have always followed as a musician is to practice the boring stuff and create timelines for doing so. After you finish a certain amount of time practicing scales, chords, and all of that good stuff, take some time to find easier songs that you enjoy listening to and try to learn them. You will no doubt have fun practicing and learning some of your favorite songs and the internet can be a great teacher in this area considering the many alternatives to playing songs in different ways to help even the most novice musician play the same tune.
