1. Create an EPK or electronic press kit
An EPK or electronic press kit is key when trying to obtain management and publishing for a newer artist or band. It is also a must for publishing because most publishers will not accept unsolicited works. An EPK is basically an online resume of sorts that showcases previous gigs/shows with pictures and videos. It should also contain information about the band, all the places frequently played out, any and all original music, and fan feedback. When creating an EPK it is important to be as creative as possible to showcase the originality of the artist or band and what makes you stand out from the crowd.
2. Create an established following or fan base
Having an already established fan base is extremely important when deciding to make music, get management, and get a publishing deal. A manager and publisher want to be certain that you can be marketed successfully and bring in a profit. Otherwise, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of more artists or bands that a manager and/or publisher will consider when taking on new clients.
3. Create social media accounts
Social media accounts are of absolute necessity in today’s day in age of the internet and marketing. Social media provides a vast opportunity if operated correctly to expand your fan base and also interact with fans that love your music. It is also wise to post frequently and if possible, create a weekly or bi-weekly blog post to keeps fans engaged with upcoming shows and projects being worked on.
4. Create and play original music
While a lot of artists begin playing covers, it is important to flex your creativity and create your own original music if you decide to take it to the next level. Managers and publishers want to see success when original music is being made and released. It is also a great way to discover your own sound and expand your fan base even further as well.
5. Play new gigs/shows
This goes without saying, but in order to be a successful musician in today’s world, you must tour or play gigs as much as possible. With the expansion of the internet over the last twenty years, the time of making money selling records is almost completely gone. Every successful musician now makes most of their money from playing live shows. While this is also a great way to expand your fan base, it showcases for a manager or publisher that people enjoy listening to you play and the potential to make a profit is there.
